Not in a Million Years

A LAW STUDENT living a fast-paced life between midterms, he’s always on the move, bouncing from one place to another. Ever since he was burned on his arms and back in his teens, he can't help but live life to the fullest.

DURING THREE SUMMERS, he works in England and North America, waiting tables to pay for his tuition back home in the Netherlands, the land of windmills and dykes. The following summer and winter are spent differently — traveling all over Europe — but these experiences are no less intense.

ALONG THE WAY, friendships are forged, encounters with girls happen, and sometimes … lips touch. But as they say, if you play the game, expect to get tackled — and eventually, he does, leaving him scrambling to make sense of it all.

This was both a fleeting and lingering reading experience. On one hand, I finished the entire story in just two days, yet its details kept resurfacing in my mind for days afterward. It seems that we’ve all, at some point, journeyed over mountains and rivers in search of love or answers. Years of unresolved feelings — if life is an experience of memory, then the comforting thought is that we truly lived and tried. This, perhaps, is what touched me most about this novel. Scars never heal; only wounds do. Every wound carries a story, and every scar is a gift of time. The Chinese believe in reincarnation. I hope all the scars of this life can heal in the next.

Easy to read, poignant, coming-of-age memoir. Reading your book makes me want to write a book. It’s like you let me have a glimpse of your innermost thoughts. You are a great storyteller. I was really touched by the part where you and Nicole were comparing scars and how her emotional ones went deeper because of the … (deleted to prevent spoilers).

This book was like the sweaty-palmed boy you go out with because you've run out of excuses only to discover he's smart and funny and you end up having a fantastic time. This book came out of the gate like a flash and in no time you're hanging on to every word. The story is told as if the author is mirroring the carpe diem philosophy of the protagonist and it really does make for an excellent narrative. If you like a book with a breathless pace and the feel of a memoir with contemporary sensibilities, please grab a copy of this gem.

I’m not really into long narratives, but as I read along, you really made the story stand out. This novel has that subtle sadness; not the in-your-face kind of sadness that most writers throw in. Out of all the female characters, I feel for Anastasia the most :(

AJ, a young and charismatic law student, is going after his dreams and adventuring into the realm of friendships and love. The story is so real, cute, sweet, and fun, but also heart-aching. Nicely narrated; the author makes the characters come alive and this very engaging liveliness made me feel as though I was watching a movie. A very delightful read that had my heart filled with smileys and also wrenched with a delicate touch of sadness. Love it! Will be looking forward to this author’s next book.
